the differences in times of anxiety and times of no anxiety

times of no anxiety: you go out for chinese food, and when you crack open your forture cookie and find no fortune, you curse the vagaries of assembly lines.

times of anxiety: you go out for chinese food, and when you crack open your fortune cookie and find no fortune, you feel a dark cloud descend upon you as you realize that this is a sign you're totally going to die.

  1. Another favorite, your phone rings at 10:00 p.m. Before you answer it, you assume that...

TONA: someone is just calling you because, as a grownup with grownup friends, sometimes people just call other people at 10:00 p.m.

TOA: someone you love has been hospitalized with horrible injuries and/or burns that make it unlikely they will live through the end of the week, and the family thought you would want to know.

(and on a totally unrelated note, my Captcha for this comment was "poiasm". which sounds like what you have when your Hawaiian vacation is amazingly good.)
